The Senate Sergeant at Arms is accepting applications for six (6) Temporary Protection Sergeant positions for a newly formed team.

The Senate Sergeant at Arms is a nonpartisan office that serves all members of the Senate. In this nonpartisan position, the successful candidate will be expected to remain free from political party affiliation, bias, or designation for the duration of the appointment. The credibility and reputation of this office depend on maintaining its nonpartisan status.

Salary: The range is in between $43,096 – $72,015 (Salary will be set commensurate with experience)

Telework: This position will work on-site in Minnesota Senate Building, State Capitol, and Senate Chamber

Days of Work/Hours: Monday-Friday with work hours that may/will vary. This position requires long and irregular hours and the ability to meet tight deadlines during the legislative session (January through May), potentially including evening and weekend work but will not exceed 80 hours in a pay period.

Position Purpose:

The Minnesota Senate is seeking multiple temporary security staff to help ensure a safe and secure working environment for all Senate staff and members during the upcoming legislative session. This position will provide a security presence for the Senate Chamber and committee meetings to ensure decorum is in place.

Position Responsibilities:

An ideal candidate will have previous experience monitoring or providing security at events or executive protection. We seek someone who has a natural ease working with and relating to employee needs in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.

Physical Requirements:

    Ability to lift up to 50lbs, stand for long periods of time, run and walk between the Capitol and Minnesota Senate Building, reach upward, climb ladders and stairs, and move heavy objects.

    Minimum Qualification:

    High school/GED

    In addition to the qualifications listed above, applicants must demonstrate:

    • Ability to work in a non-partisan capacity, supporting all members and staff regardless of party affiliation or position.
    • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

    Preferred Qualification

    • Knowledge of legislative procedures and chamber protocol.
    • Security, law enforcement, or military experience.

    In this temporary position, you will not be eligible for health benefits. However, you will be eligible for holiday pay, deferred compensation, and our employee assistance program (EAP).
